To the shore for the cure!
(Fundraiser for the Blind and Diabetic)

Local businessman Anthony Galantino after many miles walking along the Appalachian trail over the years, decided recently to head East this time around and raise money for a great cause. The local chapter of the media lions club does what it can here and there to raise money to help the blind and diabetic. Whether it's helping teach a person how to use a Braille writer or read Braille, Purchasing a seeing eye dog, or Offsetting costs of insulin for people with diabetes all over the United States. People don't realize that there are others out there that need eyeglasses and can't afford them. The Media Lions Club can help. They make a big difference. Carl Galantino (Anthony's father) has been heavily involved with the club for over 30 years. You will see those special club members in their vests sometimes at the local super markets handing out small white metal canes for your lapel in exchange for any donation you can afford to give. Sometimes you will see the guys on state street in Media at Super Sunday selling crab cakes or hot dogs, you will often hear the loud carnival like voice of Carl announcing "Hot dogs-cold soda here, get your cold soda here, Media Lions Club." One time his 9 year old granddaughter could be heard along with him. The guys put their heart into the cause and they won't ask you to join. Anthony will be hiking with backpack to the shore for 80 miles or so over the course of 3 days plus. He is hoping to get sponsors to donate .25 cents a mile. If and when he completes the journey that .25 cents would add up to $20.00. The trip will be starting in the fall of 2010. Anthony will have his backpack loaded with his tent, sleeping bag, water, snacks, and a lot of hope in making a difference.

Tone always said he wanted to walk to the shore.

It's happening now with a serious purpose.

My brother Anthony often said he wanted to walk to south Jersey some day.

This last time he mentioned it he seemed more determined that this would be the year. On this particular morning at work we weren't that busy so we had more time to talk it through as far as the route and how many miles per day he was used to hiking with his 38 lb pack on the Appalachian Trail. (One of the places he loved to be). My brother Carl and I saw within minutes that this was possibly going to happen this year. I threw a thought into the equation and said "hey, Why not make it a fund raiser for a local cause like the Media Lions Club?" That was the club that our father has always been heavily involved in. 40 years I believe he has been a Lion so far.

That's how this whole thing got started. He will be doing the walk soon.(October) He has risen over $4,000 so far from friends, family, vendors and even strangers that heard the story floating around town.

My wife Anna and I, as well as my older brother Carl call him the Mayor. He is always shaking hands, kissing babies, helping someone somewhere. On the phone, or with his truck and rarely asks for anything in return. Here he goes again, but this time he is asking for a few sponsors along the way. Most people have pledged .25 cents a mile. The max he will be going is 80 miles. He will be dropped off on the east side of the Commodore Barry Bridge with Map, Water, Backpack, Tent, and a lot of hope and determination to make a difference.

Thanks,
Vince Galantino (His brother)
